TEN BENEFITS
The Black Saga Competition:
- Opens the eyes of students, parents, teachers, and the general public to the people, places, events, and words of wisdom that have contributed to the African American experience and to American history.
- Involves and engages teachers and parents so fully they enjoy it as much as the students!
- Helps students recognize America's rich past through the lenses of history, geography, social studies, and economics.
- Sharpens students' study habits and learning skills, preparing them for more difficult levels of learning in the future.
- Teaches students how to work successfully together in teams, building character along the way.
- Contributes to building community among teachers and students in participating schools and school districts.
- Increases community support for learning activities and for the school, as publicity spreads.
- Fosters parents' involvement in their children's education and involves the entire family in the learning process.
- Develops leadership, time-management and student responsibility as students prepare for the competition.
- Is a particularly "welcomed" and "timely" event for adults, regardless of race, who have never learned much about the African American experience.
