SELECTED AWARDS
Black Saga Competition is an Award-Winning learning activity in the State of Maryland. Below is a list of selected awards that recognize the excellence of the Competition in helping children in elementary and middle schools learn about the African American experience as part of American history.
- 2007 PRIDE Award - Given by the Maryland State Department of Education and COMCAST, Inc. to recognize "excellence in service to education beyond the classrooms" and "the great things happening in Maryland Public Schools."
- 2006 Black History: Celebrating Models of Excellence Award - given by the University of Maryland College Park Office of MultiEthnic Education "to recognize those who educate America's children about Black History."
- 2005 Black History: Celebrating Models of Excellence Award - given by the University of Maryland College Park Office of MultiEthnic Education "to recognize those who educate America's children about Black History."
- 2003 Superior Service to Education Award - Given by the Patuxent Valley Professional Coalition "for superior service to education in Maryland."
- 2003 Maryland State Department of Education Vanguard Award - given by the State Department of Education (AIMMS) "for outstanding contribution to enhance minority achievement in the State of Maryland."
- 2003 Education Award - given by the National Association of Historical and Genealogical Society, Inc. Washington, D.C. "for dedicated and continued service to educate America's children."
- 2003 Certificate of Recognition - given by the Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
- 2000 Certificate of Appreciation - given by Beltsville Academic Center, Prince George's County, Maryland "in recognition of your tireless efforts in inspiring us to learn about the African-American Experience."
- 1999 Distinguished Daniel Roselle Award and Lecture - given by the Middle States Council for the Social Studies "In recognition for Scholarly Research and Publication in the Middle States Region."
- 1998 Certificate of Recognition: Communities Committed to Children Award - given by Prince George's County Board of Education "for dedicated support in the enhancement of multicultural awareness of youth in Prince George's County and throughout the State.
- 1997 Jeannette W. Shamwell Distinguished Lecturer Award - given by the Division of Education, Coppin State College, "for outstanding contribution to education in the State of Maryland."
- 1997 Certificate of Appreciation - given by College of Journalism, University of Maryland "for significantly contributing to the educational enrichment of students of journalism."
- 1996 Education Award: Maryland Legislative Black Caucus - "In recognition of tireless effort in making education a priority of your life's work and contributing your time to the MLBC."
- 1996 Certificate of Recognition - Prince George's County Council for the Social Studies for "Outstanding contribution to the field of Social Studies Education and for being a friend to teachers and students."
- 1996 Outstanding Minority Faculty Member of the Year - given by the President's Commission on Ethnic Minority Issues, "for outstanding contributions, particularly in assisting the University of Maryland in becoming an institution of excellence through diversity."
- 1996 African American Heritage Certificate of Appreciation - given by Altus Air Force Base, Oklahoma African American Heritage Committee, "for outstanding work in African American History."
- 1995 Governor's Citation - given for "your commitment to quality education, community service and our society at-large...in honor of the success of your recent book "Black Saga" and as an expression of our admiration, gratitude, and great respect for your dedicated efforts to increase public awareness of the true facts concerning African American history."
- 1995 Mayor's Citation - given "for splendid quality of public service which you have rendered,"
- 1995 Maryland House of Delegates Resolution (No. 829). Resolution "recognizes the importance of Black Saga as an enormous contribution to our society."
- 1995 Recipient of Program of Excellence Award-Collaborative Elementary School/University Partnership - given by Maryland Council for the Social Studies "for contribution to the education of young children through the Black Saga Competition."
